An important aspect of the
role of the Eastern Health and Social Services Council
is in relation to individuals who wish to complain
about an aspect of health and social services. The
Council supplies information for patients and service
users about how to complain, provides support and
acts as the patient’s “friend”.
In the course
of the past year the Council assisted in 231 new complaints.
Issues brought to the Council cover dissatisfaction
with waiting lists, clinical diagnosis and general
treatment.
The assistance
and support provided by the Council requires specific
input depending on the nature of the issue. This help
includes:
Providing
information on how to complain
Accompanying complainants
in meetings with Trusts'
Assisting in letter writing
Each complaint is treated as unique. Many of the complaints
in which the Council is involved are extremely complex
in nature. Whilst every effort is made to support
and facilitate a speedy outcome some cases can last
several years as they progress through the complaints
process. The Council support is there for the individual
through the initial complaint to independent review
to the Eastern Health and Social Services Board and
applications to the Ombudsman.
