In-Patient Satisfaction
in Belfast City Hospital 2000
5 Issues Arising
Whilst acknowledging the limitations
of this study with regard to the sample size, the survey
results indicate that the majority of the respondents were
very satisfied with the care which they received as in-patients
in Belfast City Hospital Trust. Nevertheless, there are
a number of issues arising from the data which the Trust
may wish to consider, and the following are a list of recommendations:
5.1 The Trust may wish to
review the time-lapse between the referral of patients by
GPs and the notification of dates for out-patient appointments,
with a view to shortening this time. In addition, the Trust
may wish to review the waiting times for out-patient appointments,
particularly for patients who wait longer than three months
for appointments.
5.2 As regards communication
with patients, the Trust may wish to audit the following:
(i)Patients' expectations of hospital stays; (ii)The information
provided to patients on the names of the consultants providing
their care (especially in general surgery); likely length
of stay; planned procedure or operation and what to expect
after the operation; (iii)Methods of communication with
the patient, to ensure clarity and privacy, particularly
during ward rounds.
5.3 The Trust may wish to
review the meals service and the quality, quantity and timing
of meals.
5.4 Regular monitoring of
domestic arrangements (including linen supplies, ward facilities,
noise levels and visiting times) should continue.
5.5 Further assessment of
patient involvement in the preparation of care plans should
be considered.
5.6 In relation to discharge
planning, the Trust may wish to review the information given
to patients prior to their discharge.
5.7 Consideration should
be given to a review of the public's awareness of the Charter
for Patients and Clients.
5.8 Given the low response
by older people to this survey, the Trust may wish to undertake
a separate exercise (using an approach other than a questionnaire
survey) to explore particular issues relating to this age
group.
