10 Suggested standards for effective staff-inpatient communication

1

Listen to what the patient has to say.

2

Speak to the patient her/himself rather than to a third party.

3

Speak directly to the patient.

4

Ensure that the patient can hear what is being said.

5

Adequately inform the patient.

6

Use jargon-free language which the patient can understand.

7

Ensure the patient understands what has been said.

8

Ask about, and take account of, the patient's preferences for treatment and care.

9 Give the patient the opportunity to clarify what s/he has been told and to ask any questions.
