Mater Hospital

1 Introduction

The Mater hospital was originally run by the Sisters of Mercy and joined the National Health Service in 1972. The Mater Hospital serves as an autonomous hospital within the acute hospital sector - working in partnership with other hospitals in the greater Belfast area for the benefit of patients from the city itself and province-wide.*

The Mater Hospital's corporate aims include a commitment to ensuring that the hospital staff communicate effectively with patients, their relatives or carers and the public generally. Consequently, the Mater Hospital requested that the Eastern Health and Social Services Council undertake this study, in order to explore and evaluate adult inpatient satisfaction with communication by hospital staff.
