Stroke Survivors - Our stories, in our words
The EHSSB Stroke Patient and Carer Reference Group have compiled a Report in conjunction with the Stroke Strategy Implementation Project who are working in partnership with the EHSSB and NI Chest, Heart & Stroke to develop services for stroke survivors and their carers. A group of stroke survivors and their carers have come together to write and make public a report on their personal experience of the stroke care they received and to make recommendations on how services could be improved.

Seeing Our Patients Sooner
The EHSSB produced the Seeing Our Patients Sooner document in January 2007. This document should be available for patients in GP practices. The document outlines a new scheme which makes it easier to see the doctor and other staff who provide patient care. The purpose of the scheme is to help patients see a doctor, nurse or other member of staff more quickly when requesting an appointment.

Best Practice Review of Patient Public Involvement
In November 2006 the EHSSC commissioned this “Best Practice Review of Patient Public Involvement” – with the sub-title “I organised a meeting and nobody came”. The focus for the research was on finding examples of innovative and creative PPI, to scan Northern Ireland and beyond for a variety of real and meaningful examples of engagement.

Patient Self Referral to Health and Social Services in North Down and Ards
The EHSSC commissioned this piece of work to obtain direct patient feedback on the choices that they make when deciding which type of service to go to when they have an immediate healthcare need, for example, following a minor injury. This work may suggest strategies for future engagement and communication, particularly in light of planned significant investment in the further development of community based facilities and services designed to take pressure off the acute hospital sites.

Report on NI Bugwatch Pilot

The NI Bugwatch pilot was developed by the four Health and Social Services Councils to support the Councils' lay visiting activity in relation to Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) and to promote patient/public input into the NI strategy. NI Bugwatch was based on a model developed by the Commission for Public and Patient Involvement in Health in England (CPPIH). It provides a simple tick-box checklist in relation to hospital hygiene that
allows lay visiting teams to carry out the survey.

The NI Bugwatch surveys were carried out in 8 hospitals
- Altnagelvin Hospital
- Antrim Hospital
- Belfast City Hospital
- Causeway Hospital
- Craigavon Area Hospital
- Daisy Hill Hospital
- Royal Group of Hospitals
- Mater Hospital

during 'Bugwatch Week' 19-23 September 2005, and the report was published in November 2005.

Review Of Public Administration
The Review of Public Administration was published in April. The Review has major implications for the public sector in Northern Ireland and in particular Health and Social Services. The report acknowledges the importance of the public having a voice in policy development and service monitoring. Health and Social Services Councils have a key role in ensuring that this actually happens. The Review proposes that a single regional body replace them with a strengthened role. If you have any views on this or any aspect of the review in health and social services we would be very interested to hear them.
